Cape Town is the World Design Capital for 2014.
The 2012 World Design Capital is Helsinki.
2010 was Seoul Korea,
and 2008,
the first ever World Design Capital year,
was Turino, Italy.
Out of 52 entrants for the 2014 designation, 3 were shortlisted: Bilbao Spain, Dublin Ireland, Cape Town South Africa.
Being the World Design Capital is an opportunity to focus the world's design roleplayers on Cape Town as a laboratory for design as a tool of social transformation. Which means that we are talking about design as it is applied to creating a liveable city, a city functioning first and foremost for its most vulnerable citizens.
So we are not talking only about design of products, we are talking about how design impacts on every part of life.
Cape Town, with its design legacies of apartheid, is the right place to study how design can overcome many of the challenges apartheid created, most especially with regard to dysfunctional city design and consequently dysfunctional services.
For 2014, the year that Cape Town is the World Design Capital, we will be offering special World Design Capital packages, including design-oriented creative and cultural experiences in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Guests will be given deep exclusive access to the design world in both cities through a series of interventions featuring key designers, policymakers and roleplayers. And don't forget about essential sightseeing and other creative and cultural experiences.
We are busy working on these packages, and packages will be available to book as from the 2nd of half of 2013.
