The Goema Captains - Die Alibama

Orange Morning

The Goema Captains of Cape Town is a Cape Town band. Obvious, yes.

But beneath the obvious lies the significant. The Goema Captains are the Cape Town band. Never before has a band in Cape Town so widely taken in the fabric of Cape Town culture, lifestyle  and fantasy.

The band's core members are Mac McKenzie and Hilton Schilder (and, until early 2009, Alex van Heerden). The band's legacy is Christmas Choirs, Malay Choirs, the Coon carnival and music on every corner.

The Goema Captains play Mac`s compositions, and the cannon of Cape Town traditional music, including anthems like Die Alibama and Rosa, played in their exquisite `penhouse goema' style - slowed down, elegant and magical.

Band leader Mac McKenzie's father was the legendary Mister Mac, a banjo player of national repute, and a Carnival captain of winning proportions. He was the King of the Carnival. Mac has his father's purpose and charm together with a unique musical genuis that enables him to compose the emotions of the city he has always lived in. "Off the cuff you show your hands," is Mac's favourite line. And that's where his music is at. Free and fantastical.

Hilton Schilder is from Grassy Park on the Cape Flats, he’s a pianist from a musical dynasty - the biggest musical family in the world. He’s Mr Cool in the lounge, playing the piano better than anybody in the whole wide world (for more on Hilton and his solo album, visit the site of his label, Mountain Records).
