Chico Antonio [world / Afro-rock / Mozambique] PDF Print E-mail

Guitar, voice, composition

Performance format: Chico performs with a 6 piece band including bass, drums, keys, electric guitar, acoustic guitar and voice.

Chico Antonio is the King of Maputo. Like the Cape Town musicians Mac McKenzie and Les Javan, he is one of the mavericks who does things entirely on his own terms. Don't expect afro-cliches from Chico. This is not a marrabenta man or a traditional Mozambican musician, whatever that may be.

No, Chico's music is best described as new afrobeat, the epicness of Pink Floyd, the drama of Queen, the rhythm of Fela Kuti, the flair of Franco and the genius of Chico himself. Take a listen to Maymoena, and Smile Forever, both recorded in Cape Town in 2002 as part of the afribeat.com produced festival Cape Town Maputo.

Chico's main instrument is the guitar, but originally he was a trumpet player, performing with the legendary Orchestra Marrabenta, which featured the voice of Wazimbo amongst others. Then he lost his mouthpiece on the beach and switched to guitar, or so he says. More likely, as in the case of Mac McKenzie, he wanted to be able to just move solo, without the baggage of a band. So he became a guitar player. He includes flute and his magnificent growling voice in the line-up.

Chico lives on Eduardo Mondlane avenue, high up on the 12th floor with views of everything in the city. It's as if this is his command centre. At the bottom of the building is his bank, and his favourite bar where he holds throne nightly. Chico is in complete control of his environment.
